Graduate School of Engineering
Outline
- A graduate program leading to a Master's degree was established in 1964,
and that for a Doctoral degree in 1985. These programs were reorganized
into a new Division-Department system in 2001.
The Graduate School of Engineering offers advanced instruction in pure and
applied sciences and engineering, while involving students' activities in
research. Sharing experiences with professors, students acquire principles
as well as methods of productive scholarship. There are four educational
Divisions in the Graduate School of Engineering, which are subdivided into
eleven Departments (Courses). Through lectures and exercises offered in the
individual departments, students study selected topics in their own major
field and through diversified lectures and exercises offered in the division,
they learn various subjects from a broader point of view. The new
Division-Department System makes it possible to give students diversified
educational and research opportunities.
The Graduate School of Engineering provides and maintains an atmosphere
in which scholarship and creative activities can flourish. Emphasis is
placed on the knowledge, methods, and skills for original research and
problem solving, as well as intellectual leadership, creative expression,
and other modes of achievement in the individual's chosen discipline.
Division of Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Our program involves the vast areas of engineering including electrical,
electronics, information, computer, and material engineering. Advanced
mathematics and physics will be used to study the process of novel physical
phenomena and new materials through laboratory experiments and computer
simulations. Graduate programs within the Division of Physics, Electrical
and Computer Engineering develop students' understanding of the basics in
mathematics and physics, and provide them with deeper knowledge in selected
areas in electrical power engineering, electronics, information and
communication engineering, computer engineering, simulation, phenomenon
analysis, and materials science.
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is dedicated to
producing talented graduates in areas of electrical power engineering,
electronics, information and communication engineering, and computer
engineering. The graduate program is particularly directed toward those
individuals wishing to pursue careers in engineering research and
development, or in teaching. The curriculum includes highly specialized
or interdisciplinary lectures, seminars, laboratory work and exercises.
Students are required to carry out an original research project and to
complete a thesis for a Master's degree, and a doctoral dissertation for
a Doctoral degree.
Student Categories
The Graduate School offers three student categories: regular (full-time)
students, research students, and auditors. Regular (full-time) students are
enrolled on a full-time basis to pursue a Master's or Doctorate degree.
Students whose grades and course work is equivalent to a Master's degree
of the Graduate School may register as research students, and engage
mainly in research under the supervision of his/ her main advisor.
A properly registered student may audit graduate and undergraduate
courses. Audited courses do no count toward full-time residency.
No degree will be offered to research students and auditors.
Residency and Time Limits
Master's Degree - A minimum residency of two years, devoted wholly to the
satisfactory completion of course work, a thesis, and a final examination,
are required. All work for the Master's degree must be completed within a
period of four years. A highly qualified student can complete all the
requirements for a Master's degree with in One year.
Doctorate Degree - A minimum residency of five years (including two years
toward a Master's degree), devoted wholly to the satisfactory completion
of course work, a dissertation, and a final examination are required. The
minimum residency requirement for a student who holds a Master's degree is
three years to complete all requirements for a Doctorate degree. All work
for the Doctorate degree must be completed within a period of six years.
A highly qualified student can complete all the requirements for a Doctorate
degree within three years, including two years for a Master's degree.
